Chinese manufacturer GAC is entering the Australian market with a trio of vehicles, one of which is the fully electric Aion V for which pricing and full specifications have now been confirmed.

Starting at $42,590 before on-roads, the Aion V is a mid-size SUV that will go up against compatriots like the BYD Atto 3 (from $39,990 before on-roads), though it’s closer in size to the hybrid Toyota RAV4 (from $42,260 before on-roads).

Rivals for the Aion V include the Geely EX5 (priced from $40,990 before on-roads) and Leapmotor C10 (from $45,888 plus on-roads).

The Aion V will be sold in Premium and Luxury trim levels, both of which feature a 150kW/210Nm front-mounted electric motor powered by a 75.26kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery.

Even in the base Premium gets a lot of standard kit, including a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, and 8.8-inch digital instrument and 14.6-inch touchscreen infotainment displays.

An unusual inclusion in the top-spec Luxury is a 6.6-litre refrigerator that can hold up to 12 cans. GAC says it can maintain a steady temperature of 4°C while using 0.5kWh of electricity over 24 hours, and its temperature can be adjusted from -15°C to 50°C.

In addition to the Aion V, GAC will launch with the petrol-powered Emzoom small SUV and the plug-in hybrid M8 people mover. Future products from the brand will include a dual-cab ute, due in 2027.

It sells vehicles under the GAC brand in export markets, though in China it markets separate GAC Trumpchi (mass-market vehicles), Hyptec (premium electric vehicles) and Aion (EV) brands.

It’s also currently involved in joint ventures with Honda and Toyota that date back to 1999 and 2004 respectively, both of which are 50:50 ventures to produce vehicles from each respective brand for the Chinese market.

Orders are now open for the Aion V.
