Diego’s AutoHunter Picks

In previous eras, manufacturers were known to produce “early” and “late” versions for a particular model year. I suspect that changed in the 1960s when some cars acquired the “½” suffix for the model year, either officially or as a rule of thumb (the Mustang being a famous example of the latter).

These days, it seems manufacturers look ahead and simply adjust to the future model year as long as it debuts in January or later. While none of these AutoHunter Picks have this background, you can read below to learn how this idea found itself planted in my brain. Nonetheless, which AutoHunter vehicle strikes your fancy the most? Modern sports car? Compact muscle? Old ragtop for the boulevard? Or a grown-up pony car?

2019 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS Coupe
Like the C2 Corvette, sometimes I hate myself because I prefer the Porsche 718 Cayman coupe over the Boxter convertible. How could I turn down open-air driving? It’s painful to admit that I’m a sucker for a sleek two-door when I absolutely adore ragtops.

The GTS added horsepower to the turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-four (compared to the base and Cayman S models), allowing this Cayman to tickle the threes in the 0-60 sprint.

1970 Chevrolet Nova SS
Another car that pains me—I have never been a fan of the Nova, but I also know it’s Chevrolet’s best tool for going fast. Though everyone goes ga-ga over 396 Novas, this 350-powered Nova SS seems to get lost in the shuffle by collectors.

The Green Mist hue isn’t my favorite, but I don’t think I’ve seen it as nice as on this Nova. The high bidder will be very happy with this car.

1949 Buick Super Convertible
About 10 years ago, I saw a 1946-48 Buick Special, which the guy claimed was a ’49. I did not believe him (other than not doubting his sincerity), as it didn’t look like the redesigned Buicks of which I think are gorgeous.

I soon learned the 1948 Special was carried over as an “early” ’49 model, then was updated midyear, previewing 1950 styling. However, my heart is with “true” 1949 style like this Super convertible—would you believe over 22,000 were built that year?

1971 Mercury Cougar Convertible
Don’t get distracted by “1 of 1” claims by this auction—what’s significant is how rare the M-code 351-4V (if not those equipped with Styled Steel Wheels) is for a base Cougar ragtop. I bet they both were more popular on XR-7s and, glancing at “Cougar . . . by the Numbers” by Kevin Marti, it’s true.

What’s also remarkable is the extensive list of equipment for a “standard” Cougar but, considering this was a company lease car, it’s not so surprising. Neat car!
