Geely’s Toyota Prado fighter confirmed for UK ahead of possible Australia launch

The Geely Galaxy Cruiser off-road SUV has been confirmed for the UK market, opening the door to right-hand-drive production and a potential Australian launch.

First shown as a concept at the 2025 Shanghai motor show, the automaker has yet to make a formal announcement on the Galaxy Cruiser’s British on-sale, but Autocar was told by Geely UK marketing boss Yan Tianxiao: “We will definitely launch that car in the UK.”

The Galaxy Cruiser is a boxy, rugged-looking rival to the Toyota LandCruiser Prado and Ford Everest and is based on Geely’s off-road-focused ‘SEA-R’ architecture, which also underpins the Zeekr 9X large SUV – a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) which the Geely-owned brand is considering for an Australian launch.

Like the Zeekr, it’s expected to be offered as a PHEV, potentially sharing powertrain technology with other Geely-owned brands such as Volvo or Lotus, though no technical specifications have been officially confirmed.

Geely owns Zeekr, Polestar, Lotus and Volvo, among other brands, but only introduced Geely-branded vehicles to Australia in early 2025. The brand opened its first UK dealership in November last year.

Geely Auto Australia hasn’t confirmed the Galaxy Cruiser for local showrooms, though the company’s UK rollout closely mirrors its Australian launch strategy, including the availability of factory-produced right-hand-drive vehicles.

The mid-size EX5 electric SUV was Geely’s first model in both countries, while it was followed by the Starray EM-I PHEV in Australia last year, a model that has been confirmed for a UK launch this year.

The Geely EX2 city-sized electric hatch has also been announced for both markets in 2026.

The Galaxy Cruiser will mark Geely’s first foray into the off-road segment and unashamedly adopts a boxy design similar to rivals such as the Prado as well as BYD’s Denza B5 and B8 from China.

Geely design director Flavien Dachet told Autocar: “There’s always the same recipe: whether you look at the [Land Rover] Defender, the [Mercedes-Benz] G-Wagen or the [Ford] Bronco, the codes are the same. It’s about how we interpret it in a way that’s recognisable.”

While it’s not pitched as a hardcore off-roader in the mould of the Land Rover Defender, Geely claims off-road capability will include up to 800mm of water-wading depth to match the Ford Everest and best the LandCruiser Prado by 100mm.

The Galaxy Cruiser is also expected to offer features such as active suspension and brake-by-wire technology as part of its adventure-focused toolkit.

Based on powertrain configurations used in other Zeekr and Lotus plug-in hybrid models, the Galaxy Cruiser is expected to pair a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with up to three electric motors, a battery pack of up to 70kWh, and all-wheel drive.

In other models using similar systems, this setup has been claimed to deliver up to 354km of electric-only driving under the more lenient CLTC cycle.
