Volvo EX60 set to beat Tesla Model 3 and become Australia’s EV range king

Move over Tesla Model 3, there’s a new hypermiling king among electric vehicles (EVs): the Volvo EX60 electric SUV.

Key charging capabilities have been revealed for the EX60 ahead of its official unveiling on January 21 and Australian arrival later this year, with its claimed 810km (WLTP) range better than any EV currently on sale locally.

It will also boast the ability to add up to 340km of range after just a 10-minute charge, albeit at 400kW speeds which aren’t offered in Australia, although Tesla Superchargers can deliver up to 320kW.

Volvo shared the details in a statement, with the preliminary 810km range applying to the all-wheel drive version – which typically use more energy to offer shorter ranges than two-wheel drive models.

This will make the EX60 the longest-range EV in Australia, taking the top spot from the Tesla Model 3 Long Range, which is rear-wheel drive and has a claimed 750km WLTP range.

It’s also more than the upcoming rival, the new-generation BMW iX3, which has a best range of 805km and is due here in mid-2026.

Both the BMW and Volvo will compete with the Mercedes GLC with EQ Technology (713km of range) and Tesla Model Y (up to 600km of range).

Volvo also showed the first teaser image of the EX60’s cabin (above), which will be the first model from the brand to use the new SPA3 (Scalable Platform Architecture), a modular platform the automaker plans to roll out for its next generation of vehicles.

Similar to BMW’s approach with its ‘Neue Klasse’ architecture, which will debut on the 2026 iX3, the SPA3 underpinnings will deliver a new tech ‘sub-stack’ with 800-volt capability.

This will include Volvo’s in-house developed ‘HuginCore’ computing system and Google Built-In with its Gemini Artificial Intelligence (AI) assistant.

In-car tech in the EX60 will be powered by a Snapdragon Cockpit Platform from Qualcomm, which is more powerful than in any Volvo to date, while the NVIDIA DRIVE platform will run the DriveOS operating system to power the driver assist and active safety tech.

Volvo says this hardware gives the EX60 faster processing speeds for reduced latency. The company will offer a complimentary four-year unlimited data package with the EX60.

In Australia, Volvo sales fell 18.6 per cent in 2025 while BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus all posted growth.

As well as the EX60, the Swedish brand plans to launch an updated EX90 SUV – which has lost its LiDAR tech – in 2026, as well as Black Editions of the XC40 and XC90 SUVs.
