Xpeng GX: New extended-range electric flagship SUV revealed

Electric vehicle (EV) brand Xpeng has previewed its new flagship SUV, and its latest model to include a combustion engine.

The Xpeng GX is the Chinese brand’s “flagship AI luxury six-seater SUV”, it says, and it rides on the Chinese brand’s new SEPA 3.0 Physical AI architecture.

While it hasn’t released any powertrain details yet, it’s understood the GX will be an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) featuring a small combustion engine used only as a generator to charge the battery.

The SEPA 3.0 architecture is understood to have been developed for a range of EREVs from the brand. The GX could be Xpeng’s only model without a purely electric counterpart.

EREVs and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) are popular in China, leading once EV-only brands like Xpeng and Zeekr to launch such vehicles. Xpeng late last year launched an EREV version of its spacey X9 people mover.

Xpeng appears to have released a few images of the GX prior to it being revealed in a Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) filing, which often feature images that are significantly less flattering than press shots.

The images revealed by Xpeng show a champagne-coloured GX with clean flanks and blacked-out C- and D-pillar trim, giving it a resemblance to the Range Rover.

There’s a full-width rear light bar and slim headlights, while the GX may be one of the last vehicles launched with retractable door handles as they’ll be banned in China from January 1, 2027.

Expected to measure more than five metres long, the GX will enter a bustling segment in the Chinese market and, amusingly, could be one of the only model in this segment without a ‘9’ in its name.

The Xpeng GX will take on the Denza N9, Zeekr 9X, Aito M9 and Li Auto L9. Thus far, none of these vehicles have been confirmed for the Australian market, though the local outposts of both Denza and Zeekr have indicated they’re looking at their respective flagship SUVs.

More information on the GX will be revealed closer to its Chinese launch, with key specifications set to appear in its MIIT filing.

Xpeng’s EREV version of the X9 uses a 63.3kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery and an 800V electrical system, plus a 210kW/465Nm electric motor and an 85kW turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine used as a generator.

Claimed electric-only driving range is 452km on the more lenient CLTC cycle, with total combined range of 1602km.

With the GX, Xpeng will have four SUVs, alongside three passenger cars and one people mover.

The brand currently sells just one model here – the G6 mid-size electric SUV – but has confirmed the X9 people mover and the G9L large SUV for Australian launch in 2026.

It’s unclear if the GX will come here. Should it do so, Xpeng may need to change the name, which is currently used on another luxury SUV from Lexus.
