2026 Toyota HiLux-based Fortuner spied, still no-go for Australia

TheToyota Fortunerseven-seat SUV was axed in Australia in 2025 without a replacement being announced, but a new generation has been spied testing.

Images of an updated version of the Ford Everest and Isuzu MU-X rival were published by the Kurdistan Automotive Blog, showing a disguised Fortuner on a truck in Thailand, where it’s made alongside the Toyota HiLux and other models.

The current Fortuner, which remains on sale in Australia until stocks dry up, uses the Toyota HiLux ute’s ladder-frame chassis, 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission with four-wheel drive.

The updated model is expected to follow the new-generation HiLux it will be based on, which kept the same doors, roof, tub and underpinnings as its predecessor.

The camouflaged Fortuner looks to have followed the ‘squatting sumo’ front-end styling theme of the new HiLux – which was led by Toyota Australia Design – with styling tweaks to the rear end.

The Fortuner cabin is also expected to follow the look of the HiLux interior, which saw input from the Australian design team but was led out of Japan.

Toyota Australia told CarExpert it has no plans to introduce the updated model to Australia, and it still has several months of stock of the existing model, with 240 examples delivered in January 2026.

When it announced the end of Fortuner for Australia, then Toyota vice president of sales and marketing Sean Hanley said buyers were moving into the HiLux and LandCruiser Prado instead.

The Fortuner remains on sale in the Middle East, India, Cambodia and Mexico – and other markets – with turbo-diesel and petrol models offered.

This includes a 2.7-litre naturally aspirated petrol – previously offered in HiLux in Australia – and a 4.0-litre petrol V6 with an eight-speed automatic. In Australia, it was only ever offered with a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four.

A total of 3407 Fortuners were delivered in Australia in 2025 – a 12 per cent increase year over year – making a modest contribution to Toyota’s 239,863 sales, which saw the brand top the local sales charts for the 24th consecutive year. MORE: Explore the Toyota Fortuner showroom
