When someone makes a reference to a ’57 Chevy, the first vehicle that comes to mind most of the time is a Bel Air — a quintessential “poster child” of the tailfin-laden 1950s. But the ’57 Chevy truck lineup was every bit as stylish (not to mention practical). Featured on AutoHunter is a fresh-looking 1957 Chevrolet 3600 Big Window Pickup listed by a dealer in Gladstone, Oregon.
Chevrolet’s “Task Force” pickups were built from 1955-59. The 3100-badged model was designated for light-duty work, and the 3600 (known as a 3/4-ton) was medium-duty.
One of the distinguishing features for this 3600 is its panoramic, wrap-around rear window (aptly named the “Big Window”) which helps the cab feel open and airy. The brochure for the truck said, “Panoramic windshield sweeps gracefully around the front of the cab to give a full 1,000 square inches of forward viewing area. It makes the driver’s job easier and safer. Full-view rear window, optional at extra cost, curves around the back of the cab, eliminating blind spots at the corners. It adds to truck appearance and driving safety.”
Exterior features include hooded headlights, chrome bumpers, dual side mirrors, embossed tailgate, dual exhaust system, and 17-inch Ion alloy wheels wrapped in 215/60 Continental True Contact tires. The cargo area is lined in replacement wood planks for both the floor and bed sides.
Inside the cab are a reupholstered black vinyl bench seat, color-keyed dash, manual-crank windows, retro-look AM/FM radio, and floor-mounted shifter.
Power comes from a rebuilt 235ci inline-six mated to a four-speed manual transmission. Dual two-barrel carburetors, an aftermarket intake manifold, and an Optima battery are included in the truck’s equipment list. The odometer reads 20,450 miles, but the title states mileage-exempt.
While perhaps not as beloved in 1950s pop culture as its showroom-mate, the Bel Air, the Big Window truck still had an attractive design. Plus, a mid-century-era pickup delivers added utility with which a coupe or sedan could never compete. Could it represent the best of both worlds?
