2026 MG 4 EV Urban hatch priced sharply against BYD, GAC and GWM rivals

The MG 4 EV Urban small electric hatch has been priced from $31,990 drive-away with vehicles arriving in dealers from April 1, 2026 – though there’s no word on semi-solid-state battery technology just yet.

This pricing sees the new MG undercut the GWM Ora, currently available from $33,990 drive-away, and the GAC Aion UT, which is priced at $31,990 before on-road costs albeit temporarily being offered from $30,990 drive-away. The BYD Dolphin starts at $29,990 before on-road costs.

The Urban will be sold in Australia alongside an updated version of the regular MG 4, which currently starts at $37,990 before on-road costs for the entry-level Excite.

Unlike its rear/all-wheel drive sibling, the Urban will be offered exclusively in single-motor, front-wheel drive form, with a choice of two battery sizes. However, the much-vaunted semi-solid-state battery technology expected overseas has yet to be confirmed for Australia.

The standard MG 4 EV Urban uses a 43kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, while a larger 54kWh LFP pack will be available in the Long Range version.

MG hasn’t provided official range figures for Australia, but Chinese-market versions claim up to 437km from the smaller battery and 530km for the Long Range, both based on the more lenient CLTC cycle.

Outputs for local models haven’t been confirmed, but Chinese versions produce between 110kW and 118kW with 250Nm of torque, with a claimed 0–100km/h time as quick as 9.5 seconds.

The Urban measures 4395mm long, 1842mm wide and 1551mm tall, with a 2750mm wheelbase, making it 108mm longer, 6mm wider and up to 47mm taller than the existing MG 4, along with a 45mm longer wheelbase.

It rides on the brand’s new E3 platform and uses torsion-beam rear suspension, rather than the more advanced multi-link independent setup found in the current MG4.

Boot capacity is between 568 and 577 litres (measured to the roof), expanding to 1364 litres with the rear seats folded.

Full specifications and further details are expected as the MG 4 EV Urban arrives in Australian showrooms next month.

MG is also working on an MG 2 EV to rival the BYD Atto 1, which is smaller and currently the cheapest EV in Australia, priced from $24,990 before on-road costs.
