Toyota Australia is recalling over 13,000 HiLux utes due to a defect that may prevent their electric power steering system from working.
“Affected HiLux vehicles have been fitted with a Toyota Genuine Accessory bull bar or nudge bar with light bar on which the wiring harness may have been incorrectly installed,” the company says in its recall notice.
“This can compromise the earth connection to the Electric Power Steering (EPS) module, potentially resulting in the EPS becoming inoperative.
“The loss of power steering assistance will increase the steering effort at low speeds which may potentially increase the risk of an accident, causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and/or other road users.”

If you own an affected vehicle, you’ll need to schedule an appointment with an authorised Toyota dealership to have it inspected and, if required, have the EPS earth terminal orientation fixed, free of charge.
Toyota says the inspection and correction will take approximately 30 minutes but, depending on the dealer’s work schedule, you may need to make your vehicle available for a longer period of time.
If you have any further questions, you can contact your preferred Toyota dealer or the Toyota Recall Campaign Helpline on weekdays between 8:00am and 6:00pm AEDT on 1800 987 366.
