New cars crossed the $50,000 average transaction price last month and is likely to stay there for a while. Fortunately, we could always turn to the used market as the escape hatch. It isn’t anymore.
A recent Edmunds study lays out the damage. According to Edmunds, a car in the $10,000 to $15,000 range now averages almost nine years old with roughly 98,000 miles on the odometer. Edmunds notes that back in 2019, the same money bought a car four years younger with 40,000 fewer miles. The budget shopper hasn’t just lost purchasing power — the actual metal has aged out from underneath them.
Edmunds calls the broader shift “striking,” and the numbers earn the word. In Q2 2019, cars priced below $20,000 made up 55.2 percent of the used market, per Edmunds. By Q2 2026, that share had collapsed to 31.8 percent. Cars under $15,000 fell from 31.6 percent of sales to 17.8 percent. At the top end, Edmunds reports the slice of used cars carrying a sticker of $50,000 or more grew almost fourfold over the same stretch, climbing from 2.3 percent to 8.3 percent.
Edmunds traces the root cause back to the production stoppages of the pandemic. Cars that were never built in 2020 and 2021 are the used cars that don’t exist now, leaving a shallower pool for everyone shopping downstream. According to Edmunds, used prices have climbed steadily ever since, and there’s no obvious mechanism to reverse it.
The three-year-old used car tells the story. Its average transaction price hit $32,461 in Q2 2026, a record high for the quarter—up 4 percent year-over-year and 15.5% from Q2 2021, when supply constraints first started inflating prices, according to Edmunds.
Here’s the part that should worry anyone hoping for relief: buyers aren’t pushing back. Edmunds reports that three-year-old used cars moved at the same clip in Q2 2026 as a year earlier, spending an average of 38 days on lots in each period. Dwell time says demand is holding firm even at record prices.
Which means the prices won’t fall on their own. Buyers, so far, haven’t reached their limit. The odometers, on the other hand, keep climbing.
