While looking at the brochure for Chevrolet’s 1966 line of trucks I realized that it was the automotive equivalent of The Container Store. Chevy offered an array of models that could hold different configurations of people and cargo, including pickups, vans, stake trucks, chassis cabs, and vehicles like our Pick of the Day. Whether you needed a traditional pickup with an open bed for taller cargo, car/truck hybrid for a blend of comfort and capability, or a van or truck with a concealed storage area, Chevy had something for you. It offered two versions of its panel truck: a half-ton model with two- or four-wheel drive, a 7.5-foot body, and 175 cubic feet of cargo space, and a one-ton model with a 10-foot body and 231 cubic feet of space. Both came with coil springs up front, a wood cargo floor with steel skid strips, and rear doors that could stay open at 90 or 180 degrees to make loading/unloading cargo easier. The standard engine was a 250ci I-6, but a 292ci six and a 283ci V-8 were available.
Chevy’s panel trucks were primarily intended to be work vehicles, but this one could function perfectly as either a personal ride or a beast of burden. With its LED lighting, low-key bronze/ivory two-tone finish, four-inch-lower front end, 15-inch rally wheels, and “fresh chrome on the door handles, grille, and front and rear bumpers,” it would look right at home at a neighborhood car show.
But if you need to pick up heavy, dirty stuff at Home Depot, you could lay it on the refinished wood floor boards in the back (after laying down a protective cargo blanket, of course!) and get it home with the combination of a 350, 700R4 four-speed automatic overdrive transmission, and 3.73 gears. The power brakes and steering would provide peace of mind along the way.
Either way, you and your passenger would be riding on newer bucket seats and listening to a modern Sony head unit.
