The Roadster that Tesla has been promising fans for the better part of a decade will have to keep waiting. The company said Monday it made the “difficult decision” to bump its reveal from Oct. 1 to Oct. 15, citing severe weather in the forecast.
“We’ve been tracking the weather closely with local meteorologists, but given the severe conditions predicted & because this event can only be held outdoors, we’ve made the difficult decision to reschedule,” Tesla said in an X post.
The reveal date was only set last month, after years of teasing a next-generation supercar. So a two-week slip is barely a rounding error on a timeline that already stretches back to the 2017 concept unveil, complete with the promise of a “SpaceX Package” that Elon Musk once suggested could let the thing hover short distances.
The detail worth chewing on is the “outdoors only” bit. Tesla says the event can only be held outdoors, which is a curious requirement for showing off a car. According to The Information, Tesla has been prepping a flying stunt to show off a special-edition Roadster, with a street-legal version also on offer.
Whether the production car actually pulls off any of the theatrics Musk has floated over the years remains unanswered. So does the price, the on-sale date, and whether the sub-one-second 0-60 figures that have been kicked around are real numbers or marketing fever dreams. All of it now waits until October 15, assuming the skies cooperate.
None of this is new territory for a program that has blown through every timeline attached to it. The concept debuted alongside the Tesla Semi in 2017. Reservations opened. Years passed. Deposits sat. And here we are, still parsing weather reports for clues about whether a car might fly.
Two more weeks, then. After nearly a decade, it hardly registers.
