Nissan Navara Warrior: Next-generation tough ute cancelled as brand focuses on new Chinese PHEV

A next-generation Nissan Navara Warrior won’t be coming after all.

Nissan Australia has confirmed it has cancelled development of the tougher, more capable version of its recently launched Mitsubishi Triton-based D27 Navara as it shifts its focus to the Chinese-sourced Navara Pro plug-in hybrid (PHEV) ute, due on sale here during 2027.

“Since revealing the D27 Navara Warrior concept last November, we have progressed development while continuously reviewing the business case and our product priorities,” said a Nissan Australia spokesperson in a statement.

“With the upcoming arrival of the Navara PRO PHEV, we have decided not to proceed with the D27 Navara Warrior program.

“Our priority is now to successfully launch the all-new Navara PRO PHEV next year, ensuring we deliver a product that meets customer needs and supports our long-term business objectives.”

Nissan only appears to have cancelled the Navara Warrior concept, and hasn’t announced any wider move away from Premcar, the Melbourne engineering company that helped produce the original Navara and Patrol Warriors.

Since Nissan launched its first Warrior version of the previous-generation D23-series Navara in 2019, it has further expanded its involvement with Premcar.

This included further Warrior variants of the D23 Navara, plus the Y62 Patrol Warrior. Nissan also enlisted Premcar to do the chassis tuning for the standard D27 Navara range, and announced the Aussie company would also be fettling Navaras for the South African market.

The next-generation Navara Warrior had been confirmed by former Nissan Oceania boss Andrew Humberstone, who was replaced by Steve Milette on April 1, 2026.

Nissan even revealed a concept version of the upcoming tough truck in November 2025. In addition to various aesthetic upgrades, it featured a suspension lift (with Lava Red coil springs and dampers) and a wider track courtesy of aftermarket 17-inch wheels wrapped in 32.2-inch all-terrain tyres.

Mr Humberstone subsequently announced in March 2026 that the new Navara Warrior would arrive before the end of the year.

Premcar also confirmed in May 2026 it wouldn’t just be a rebadge of the then-new Mitsubishi Triton Raider, with different teams working on the different flagship utes.

The axing of the new-generation Navara Warrior project comes as sales of the Navara lineup continue to sag.

To the end of September, Navara sales are down 48 per cent on the same period last year, with just 3227 reaching buyers.

While that could be attributed in part to the changeover to a new-generation model, for which customer deliveries commenced earlier this year, Navara sales have been trending downwards.

Nissan pared back the Navara lineup with the new-generation model, offering only dual-cab four-wheel drive automatic pickup variants. However, in doing so, it said this configuration accounted for 90 per cent of sales of the outgoing D23 Navara.

Navara sales used to reliably sit above 10,000 units annually, but fell below this in 2023 and 2025.

Last year, Nissan delivered 7249 Navaras in Australia. This saw it outsold almost two-to-one by the BYD Shark 6 PHEV launched early in 2025, which Nissan will tackle head-on with its new Navara Pro.

Nissan has confirmed it’s considering a more capable version of the Navara Pro, though it doesn’t currently have a Premcar Navara Pro program in development.
