Mercedes-Benz Mythos special previews V8-powered AMG CLE63

Mercedes-Benz has previewed the second model in its ultra-exclusive Mythos Series, releasing images of a camouflaged vehicle – which could be V8-powered – based on the CLE coupe.

The latest images show a camouflaged version of what the automaker calls an “extreme new model” for the Mythos Series, testing in wintry conditions in Sweden.

While further details are yet to be officially announced, Mercedes-Benz says the vehicle is “bearing a close resemblance to the popular CLE”.

Timing for the new Mythos Series model hasn’t been shared, nor have details such as pricing, equipment levels or its powertrain, with the automaker’s media statement simply saying it’s “on the horizon”.

The imposing coupe teased runs a low-to-the-ground stance, with more aggressive front and rear bumpers, a rear diffuser and a prominent rear wing.

A roll cage is clearly visible inside the test car, while the large trapezoidal exhaust outlets again further support reports it will be powered by a version of Mercedes-AMG’s 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine.

While not officially confirmed, the new CLE63 is expected to be unveiled later this year, ahead of Australian showroom arrivals in 2027.

Significantly, it’s also anticipated to mark the introduction of V8 power to the CLE, after the automaker declared in early 2025 it was developing “a next-generation, high-tech electrified V8”.

V8-engined CLE prototypes have since been spied testing. It’s unclear whether this new engine will also be used in the C63 AMG, following its controversial switch to a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder plug-in hybrid (PHEV) with its latest generation.

The CLE range – which replaced two-door versions of the previous C-Class and E-Class – currently tops out with the Mercedes-AMG CLE53, which features a turbocharged, mild-hybrid 3.0-litre inline six.

Mercedes-Benz has since recommitted to V8 and V12 internal combustion engines, while rival German brand BMW has also confirmed it’ll continue offering petrol versions of its inline six-cylinder, V8 and V12 powertrains in future models.

The German luxury brand announced its Mythos Series sub-brand in May 2022, part of a push to focus on more expensive and more profitable vehicles.

In December 2024, it revealed the first Mythos vehicle: the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed, based on the SL, with a production run of just 250 vehicles.

This dramatic roadster was described by the automaker as its vision of a road-going, two-seat Formula One-inspired machine, complete with the category’s ‘halo’ roll hoop.

Producing 430kW and 800Nm from its 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 – unchanged from the donor SL63 – the PureSpeed is claimed to reach a top speed of 315km/h and accelerate from 0–100km/h in 3.6 seconds.

Mythos Series vehicles will be available only via factory order through Mercedes-AMG headquarters in Affalterbach, Germany.
