Omoda Jaecoo is following its sister brand Chery in launching an electric vehicle (EV) in Australia.
After launching here last year with the Jaecoo J7 petrol and plug-in hybrid mid-size SUV, Omoda Jaecoo is launching the smaller Jaecoo J5. It’s due in local showrooms in January 2026.
It’ll kick off the new nameplate’s launch with an all-electric version, with petrol and hybrid powertrains to follow in March.

Omoda Jaecoo Australia says the J5 EV will launch in a single, well-specified model grade that “comes standard with a wide array of features that will appeal to Aussie buyers, especially those with a fur baby”.
The company has yet to announce pricing for this variant.
The J5 EV features a single front-mounted electric motor producing 155kW of power and 288Nm of torque, good for a 0-100km/h time of 7.7 seconds. It’s powered by a 61.1kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery.
Omoda Jaecoo claims an electric range figure of 402km on the WLTP cycle, as well as energy consumption of 14.3kWh/100km. A 30-80 per cent charge on a DC fast-charger takes a claimed 28 minutes.
The J5 EV is rated to tow 750kg with a non-braked trailer.
We’re not sure why Omoda Jaecoo went with the Track model grade name for the J5 EV. While it aligns it with other Omoda Jaecoo products, this isn’t designed for off-road tracks (it’s front-wheel drive) or racetracks (it’s a small electric SUV).

Omoda Jaecoo notes the leatherette upholstery used is pet-friendly and made of a special silicone-based material it claims is antibacterial and both easier to clean and more durable than other upholstery.
Externally, the electric SUV is distinguished from other Jaecoo J5s via a unique, closed-off grille with active aero.
The J5 EV is backed by an eight-year, unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty and eight-year, unlimited-kilometre battery warranty, with eight years of capped-price servicing.
Featuring a similar silhouette to the J7, the five-seat J5 measures 4380mm long, 1860mm wide and 1650mm tall on a 2620mm wheelbase, making it slightly shorter overall than Chery’s own C5/E5 duo but up to 50mm longer than the top-selling Hyundai Kona.
Omoda Jaecoo had previously promised the J5 would launch here in February 2026, with the range to also comprise a 108kW/210Nm turbo 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine mated with a continuously variable transmission, plus a 1.5-litre four-cylinder hybrid.
“Kicking off with the BEV variant, it will be a compelling choice in an increasingly competitive EV market,” said Omoda Jaecoo Australia’s chief commercial officer, Roy Muñoz.
“No other vehicle currently offers a pet-friendly interior and a large selection of accessories, which range from a dog carrier to a waterproof cargo mat, and even a karaoke machine.”
The J5 will be Omoda Jaecoo’s fourth model in Australia, following the Jaecoo J7 and J8, and the Omoda 9. Also due in Australian showrooms in 2026 is the mid-size Omoda 7.
To the end of November, Omoda Jaecoo has delivered 3224 vehicles in Australia, more than the likes of Jeep (1521) and Peugeot (1249).
