Pick of the Day: 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera

For the last 15 or so years, one of the hottest cars in the world of collectible sports cars is the classic Porsche 911. There is good reason that a nice air-cooled 911 is one of the most reliable classic sports cars ever built. Today’s Pick of the Day is a prime example from what might be the very best era of the 911, a 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe offered by a dealer in Flowery Branch, Georgia.

The reason that so many people love the 911 is that, of all the collectible sports cars built from the 1960-80s, the 911 stands as the one that not only completely delivers on the classic sports car experience, but the one that also requires the least amount of compromise by its owners and drivers. If you drive one classic 911 (say a 1967 911S) and then jump into a 1980s model, everything is familiar, in the same place, and functions just about the same. The performance may be higher, but the feel of getting into and driving the car is essentially the same, with improvements of the design happening with each generation.

By the time our Pick of the Day was built, Porsche had literally perfected the design. It offered strong performance, the same super high build quality, and yet did not erase the things that made the 911 so special when it was introduced.

This specific 911 Carrera is painted in the stunning Porsche Slate Blue Metallic over a black leather interior. According to the seller it has covered a total of only 56,896 miles. This car was delivered when new with the following options: 018 – steering wheel with elevated hub, 158 – cassette-radio Blaupunkt Monterey, 395 – 16-inch Fuchs forged alloy wheels, 469 – black roofliner, 474 – sports shock absorbers, 577 – heated windshield, and 650 – sun/moonroof.

Recent service on this Porsche includes new supply and return fuel lines, new high pressure fuel lines, new fuel pump, new fuel filter, new intake manifold gaskets, new oil lines, hoses, and pipes, new oil pressure switch, brake rotors, calipers, pads, brake hoses, alternator drive belt, air conditioning belt, battery, and hood shocks and struts. All of the above items are typical wear items, and the replacement of the fuel lines is important since these lines can leak fuel when they age.

The seller calls this an investment-grade car, and I would agree. The stunning color combination, combined with the low mileage and recent services, makes this a car you can pick up and drive home without a worry. It is also a car that would likely fare well at a judged concours event such as Porsche Werks Reunion.

The asking price for this 1994 Porsche 911 Carrera is a very reasonable $77,000, or less than half the price of a new 911. Sure, the new 911 has plenty of neat options and is much faster, but it lacks the soul of the classic air-cooled 911. These cars are quite special and are likely to hold or increase in value for a long time, something a new, base 911 is not likely to do.
