The market for unmodified classic SUVs is shrinking, whether it’s due to accidents, natural disasters, mechanical neglect, or restoration companies snapping up the good ones and upgrading them into prohibitively expensive builds. Our Pick of the Day is part of that shrinking market, but it’s aged well and you can buy it right now in stock form. This 49,000-mile 1993 Jeep Cherokee Country is listed on ClassicCars.com by a dealer in Chicago.

The 1984-2001 XJ Jeep Cherokees are popular for several reasons. One is their simple, classic, two-box styling. Another is their combination of off-road capabilities and on-road comfort. Their dimensions, especially compared to the full-size Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer (which the XJ was originally supposed to replace), is also a big plus. A major plus is the reliability of the 4.0-liter I-6 that was added to the lineup starting with the 1987 model year. Unfortunately, the XJ’s popularity means that the ones you see for sale often have plenty of modifications (which happens with almost every other Jeep, too) and/or astronomical mileage figures. This particular XJ has managed to avoid both, racking up only 49,274 miles over the past 33 years.

In 1993, Jeep introduced the Country trim level. According to Jeep’s brochure for the model year, it featured “a unique Champagne-colored lower bodyside treatment, as well as standards like a high-output 4.0 litre engine, roof rack, extra-quiet insulation” and more. Jeep rated the engine at 190 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque. Interior appointments included “front recliner wingback bucket seats with integral headrests, Luggage fabric seat coverings, and full center console with covered storage.”

As you look around this Cherokee, you’ll notice its neutral color scheme of black and silver, attractive lattice wheels with Ironman all-terrains, and convenience features such as power steering, power windows and locks, and air conditioning. There’s also a four-speed automatic. Next to the shifter (where you’d typically find the lever for the transfer case) is a shallow storage area.

The fact that this is a two-wheel-drive Cherokee probably has a lot to do with its low mileage. Yes, many Jeeps are 4x4s, but not everyone wants or needs that capability and its associated maintenance requirements and costs. Some would be just fine with this rig’s timeless good looks, robust engine, useful features, and cargo space. Are you one of those people? If so, you can buy this 1993 Jeep Cherokee Country for $18,995. To see it in action, watch the walk-around and road test video below.
