Skoda needs to sell more EVs in Australia

Czech automaker Skoda isn’t hitting its electric vehicle (EV) sales targets in Australia, and deliveries will need to effectively double for the brand to stave off the pressures of new emissions regulations.

Skoda’s two EVs Down Under – the Elroq and Enyaq SUVs – accounted for 635 combined sales last year, or 13.2 per cent of a total 4808 deliveries.

That not only ranked Skoda 20th for EV sales in Australia – behind the likes of Cupra, Mini and Porsche – but also fell well short of internal targets to combat the Australian Government’s New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES).

“It’s not enough, we need more. We need at least 20 per cent to make it work,” Skoda Australia director Lucie Kuhn told CarExpert.

However, 2026 has gotten off to a stronger start – Skoda’s total sales volume is up 7.8 per cent, while EVs now make up a 22.4 per cent share.

And Ms Kuhn expects that trend to continue, given recent improvements in vehicle supply and the introduction of new, entry-level variants of both electric models.

“Last year we still had the old generation of the Enyaq, which we really didn’t push so strongly to Australia because we knew that there was already a new generation on the way,” Ms Kuhn said.

“The new generation launched in the second half the year, so we were waiting for some supply, of course.

“Now, we can start doing some more serious deliveries, and the deliveries can actually go in the direction of 20-30 per cent.”

Skoda EV sales could also be set to benefit from the current fuel crisis in Australia – ongoing conflict in the Middle East has seen fuel prices rise substantially over the past month, and some service stations have even run out of fuel.

As a result, dealers have seen a spike in EV demand, a spike that mightn’t fade for a while depending on the duration of the war.

Looking further ahead, Skoda has confirmed two all-new electric SUVs for launch in 2026, including the entry-level Epiq and the Peaq – a production version of the Vision 7S concept. Both are set to be sold here, though launch timing is still to be confirmed.

“We are currently in discussions and negotiations with global to get those models to Australia as soon as possible,” confirmed Ms Kuhn.
