The next 007 will be Chinese

We’re still waiting for word on who will be the next James Bond, aka Agent 007, but that hasn’t stopped the Chinese automotive industry from pumping out another 007.

No, it’s not a suave secret agent, but rather a large electric liftback that’s now available to order in New Zealand, ahead of first dealership arrivals in February 2026.

The Dongfeng 007 entered production in China back in 2024 and it’s now bound for our neighbours across the ditch, where the Chinese brand is distributed by Armstrong’s Distribution Limited.

The independent distributor also exclusively handles Citroen, Opel, Peugeot and Smart in New Zealand, and launched the Dongfeng brand late last year. The Chinese automaker has yet to announce plans for the Australian market.

The Dongfeng 007 is completely unrelated to an almost identically sized electric sedan bearing the same name: the Zeekr 007. Zeekr is owned by Geely, while the Dongfeng Motor Corporation is a separate, state-owned automaker.

The Dongfeng 007 is known as the Dongfeng eπ 007 in China (pronounced ‘e pi’, in case you were wondering).

It measures 4880mm long, 1895mm wide and 1460mm tall on a 2915mm wheelbase, making it 40mm shorter, 55mm wider and 15mm taller than a Toyota Camry on a 90mm longer wheelbase.

Riding on MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension, the 007 will be offered in New Zealand with a 70.26kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery supporting 200kW DC fast-charging, and a choice of two powertrains.

The Long Range RWD variant features a single-motor rear-wheel drive powertrain producing 200kW of power and 320Nm of torque, a claimed 0-100km/h time of 5.8 seconds and claimed range of 520km on the WLTP cycle.

It’s priced at NZ$54,990 (~A$47,500), and comes standard with 19-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic glass roof, power tailgate, a 19-speaker WANOS sound system, 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, and ventilated and power-adjustable front seats.

There’s also the requisite suite of active safety and driver assist technology, which includes a 540-degree surround-view camera with a transparent chassis view, plus Traffic Jam Assist and Highway Driving Assist.

An extra NZ$5000 (~A$4300) gets you the dual-motor all-wheel drive Performance flagship with a 400kW/640Nm powertrain, a claimed 0-100km/h time of 3.9 seconds, and 389km of WLTP range. The list of standard equipment is essentially unchanged, though the Performance uniquely offers a two-tone ivory and grey interior.

The 007 will be Dongfeng’s ‘hero’ model in New Zealand, where it will sit above its two other models there: the Box, a small electric hatchback; and the Vigo, a small electric SUV.

The latter is another name for the Nammi 06, which was spied testing in Australia last year.

Dongfeng has consolidated its eπ, Aeolus and Nammi brands under the Dongfeng brand. The state-owned automaker also owns the premium electric Voyah brand and M-Hero, which produces high-end off-roaders.

Then there’s Forthing, which received type approval late last year to sell its mid-size Friday SUV here with electric and extended-range electric powertrains. Forthing is a brand owned by Dongfeng Liuzhou, a subsidiary of Dongfeng Motor Group.

Dongfeng has joint ventures with Honda and Nissan, with the latter spawning a range of Chinese-market vehicles such as the Nissan Frontier Pro dual-cab ute. This BYD Shark 6-rivalling plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) is coming to Australia in 2027.
