Question of the Day? Will Chinese Cars be Banned or Approved by the End of the Week?

The debate about allowing new Chinese vehicles to travel American roads anytime soon looks to be coming to a head this week as China’s President Xi Jinping arrives for a visit with U.S. President Donald Trump.

A bipartisan effort led by Michigan’s Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin and Republican Senator Bernie Moreno of Ohio to ban Chinese vehicles is speeding through the U.S. Senate this week. That bill is also hustling through the U.S. House of Representatives at a similar pace. The bill’s supporters believe Chinese cars, whether imported from China or built in the U.S. by a Chinese company represent a significant security risk.

Xi and Trump are expected to meet later this week to discuss a variety of trade issues, including cars. Trump, counter to his Republican cohorts, favors allowing Chinese automakers to build vehicles in the U.S. — so long as they’re built by American workers.

His stance has automakers concerned, and much of the industry came together last week to tell him to “maintain policies that keep the door firmly shut” when it comes to Chinese vehicles traversing American streets.

So where does your allegiance lie? With the “NO WAY!” camp of politicians or Trump and his small coterie of “Sure!” Do you think if he allows it them to build it, they will come — and threaten the U.S. auto industry and the country’s safety? Let us know.
