In early 2018, I attended the Austin JeepPeople group’s “Polar Bear Run” at the Hidden Falls Adventure Park in Marble Falls, Texas. I showed up in the all-new 2018 Jeep Wrangler and, like my fellow attendees, I removed (with the help of some new friends) the doors and roof, then went wheeling in the cold. It just goes to show that any time is a great time to go cruising in a Jeep. You can go off-road in any season in our Pick of the Day, even though it was made with a specific one in mind. For 1985, Jeep offered a range of off-road SUVs and trucks. For luxury buyers, there was the Grand Wagoneer. Those in search of smaller dimensions and greater fuel economy had the option of the Grand Wagoneer’s intended replacement, the (XJ) Cherokee. For more down-and-dirty action, there were the J10 and J20 trucks and the CJ-7.
So what exactly is the Spring Special? It’s an appearance package that added an attractive blend of color and contrast. In a brochure, Jeep said it included a “Red micatallic or bronze micatallic exterior with unique striping, high-back bucket seats in linen grain vinyl and white spoke style wheels,” among other features.
Not only do the tri-tone orange stripes look great on this CJ, but the white wheels also make them pop even more. There are more reasons why this rig is special, regardless of the season — the biggest one is that it was restored in 2024, which is reflected in the paint, half-doors, black vinyl upholstery, interior controls, and carpeting.
Then there’s the two-barrel 258ci inline-six that was rebuilt in 2021. It comes paired with a five-speed manual gearbox and, of course, four-wheel drive running through a dual-range transfer case. There’s no hardtop in place, but there is a black bikini top ready to provide a mix of open-air driving and sun coverage. Plus, one of the photos in the dealer’s picture gallery shows this Jeep won a National First Prize from the Antique Automobile Club of America.
