Jaguar Type 01 electric GT is a big, bold and blocky reset of the iconic British brand

Jaguar’s controversial relaunch has borne fruit.

The Jaguar Type 01 has been revealed as the production version of the polarising Type 00 concept, revealed in December 2024 after a controversial brand relaunch campaign the month before that earned the ire of everyone from Tesla CEO Elon Musk to US President Donald Trump.

The large electric grand tourer is the first model from a British marque that is being repositioned as a more upmarket, exclusive and electric-only brand.

It’s coming to Australia, priced from $300,000 before on-road costs, with details on orders and delivery timing to be “communicated in due course”.

Jaguar is calling its reveal the biggest moment for the brand since the Jaguar name was born in 1935 – a big call for the marque that brought us classics like the E-Type and the XJ.

A “luxury four-door GT” designed, engineered and built in the UK, the Type 01 closely resembles the bold Type 00 concept with an imposing grille, short front overhang, frameless door windows, prominent shoulders, concealed tail-lights, and no rear windscreen.

The Type 01 wears the brand’s new face with a “reductive and sophisticated look”, featuring HD LED headlights – each with 17,000 pixels – plus active shutters.

Jaguar says the flush door handles can deploy through 4mm of sheet ice, while down back there’s a deployable spoiler.

While it features a blocky, monolithic design and measures 5235mm long, it’s Jaguar’s most aerodynamic vehicle yet with a drag coefficient of 0.23Cd.

It’s just 20mm shorter than the long-wheelbase version of the final XJ, but at just 1403mm tall it’s 57mm lower overall. While it doesn’t need to have such a long bonnet, given the battery is located primarily under the cabin (albeit extending slightly forward of it), Jaguar has nevertheless given the Type 01 a prominent prow.

The battery is also split to maximise rear-seat legroom.

While it doesn’t look anything like an E-Type, Jaguar says the distance from the front axle to the front door is 898mm and therefore makes up 17 per cent of the car’s total length – almost the same as for the E-Type, which also had a luxuriously long bonnet.

It’s in this area, which Jaguar calls the “luxury gap”, where you’ll find the one “leaper” logo depicting a jaguar cat, laser-etched on an anodised brass-effect finisher. The vehicle is otherwise identifiable by a mixed-case wordmark on the grille.

Jaguar will offer the Type 01 with a choice of 21- or 23-inch alloy wheels, while an aluminium ‘finisher’ encircles the vehicle.

Debuting the Jaguar Electric Architecture, the Type 01 features 50:50 weight distribution, rear-biased all-wheel drive, and all-wheel steering, with this huge four-door having a turning circle of just 11.5m.

It features double-wishbone front and integral link rear suspension with Dynamic Air Suspension integrating switchable volume air springs and twin-valve active dampers. Pirelli P Zero tyres are standard.

The Type 01 is powered by a tri-motor electric powertrain with 757kW of power and 1365Nm of torque, rocketing the large grand tourer to 100km/h from standstill in a claimed 3.2 seconds. The rear motors can disengage when not needed to increase efficiency.

Underneath sits a huge 118kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery, giving it up to 720km of WLTP range.

The Type 01 features an 850V electrical architecture, with Jaguar claiming 321km of range can be added in as little as 13 minutes using a 350kW DC fast-charger. The battery features split-charging capability, with 250kW charging possible at 400 volts. AC charging is possible at up to 22kW.

There’s a one-pedal mode, plus five selectable drive modes: Jaguar, Dynamic, Efficient and Ice & Snow, plus the customisable Curated mode. Dynamic sends up to 87 per cent of power to the rear axle, while also stiffening the suspension and sharpening the steering and throttle.

Inside, there’s a central spine, finished with “brass-inspired elements” like the tops of the doors, which bisects the cabin to give each of the four occupants their own defined space.

Ahead of the driver is a 24-inch glass OLED screen called the Interactive Driver Display, while a “smartphone-style” 7.0-inch display links the dashboard and the centre console and can be used to adjust functions like the climate control. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

A digital rear-view display is embedded at the base of the windscreen in lieu of a conventional rear-view mirror.

Jaguar has also collaborated with Meridian on a “full-width, full-range, automotive-first” Panoramic Soundbar which runs along the base of the windscreen.

There are 13 speakers integrated into the soundbar, with a further 25 speakers concealed elsewhere in the cabin, including in the Sensory Audio front seats that feature speakers integrated into the head restraints.

Other standard equipment includes 12-way power-adjustable front seats with heating, cooling and ‘hot-stone’ massaging functions, plus 50:50-split/folding rear seats with heating and cooling, active noise cancellation, a fragrance diffuser, dual wireless phone chargers, and colour-adjustable ambient lighting.

The panoramic glass roof can be virtually dimmed, while rear-seat occupants have their own 7.0-inch display.

A power tailgate is standard, and opens to reveal a 450L cargo space. This expands to 1000L with the rear seats folded.

The interior colour palette was inspired by travertine stone, and material choices include Woolblend Kvadrat DuoWeave textile wraps, UltraFabrics NeoGrain, and leather.

The textile flooring, made using recycled materials, wraps into the lower doors and pillar trims.

“From its dramatic design to its captivating drive, Type 01 distils the essence of Jaguar into a car for a new era,” said Jaguar managing director Rawdon Glover.

“Jaguars should be objects of desire and culturally relevant – that’s their natural habitat and where Jaguar is returning. Type 01 is the foundation of the brand, one that makes no compromise between design and engineering in our quest to reinvent Jaguar for the 21st century.”
