The Chery Stockman will fall just shy of its main dual-cab 4×4 ute rivals in terms of braked towing capacity… but only by 5kg.

Further (preliminary) specifications have been released for the new diesel plug-in hybrid (PHEV) ute, which Chery confirmed yesterday will now reach Australian customers later than expected from February 1, 2027.

It has now confirmed the Stockman will have a braked towing capacity of 3495kg, falling just 5kg short of the BYD Shark 6 Performance, Ford Ranger Hybrid and GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV. Unbraked towing capacity is 750kg.

However, its 96km of WLTP electric range beats the Shark 6 Performance (80km WLTP) and Ranger Hybrid (50km NEDC). GWM quotes 115km of range for its PHEV ute, but this is on the more lenient NEDC cycle.

Kerb weight is listed as 2735kg, with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of 3500kg, and a gross combined mass (GCM) of 6500kg.

That pegs the payload at 765kg, which is above the Cannon Alpha PHEV (685kg) and Shark 6 Performance (725kg), but below the Ranger Hybrid (901-1009kg).

The Stockman will be launched with a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder PHEV powertrain mated with a dedicated hybrid transmission and a 34kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery mounted under the tub, with total system outputs of 350kW and 800Nm.

It features an 80L fuel tank and is claimed to consume 1.1L/100km on the combined cycle while emitting 30g/km of CO2. Chery hasn’t published a fuel consumption figure for the Stockman with a depleted battery.

Energy consumption is listed at 31.1kWh/100km.

A petrol PHEV powertrain will follow in the second half of 2027, producing 395kW and 1000Nm.

The Stockman features double-wishbone front suspension, but while the diesel PHEV will feature leaf-spring rear suspension, the petrol PHEV will use coils at the rear.

The diesel PHEV has standard front, centre and rear differential locks, all-terrain tyres, and boasts 247mm of ground clearance, with an approach angle of 30 degrees and a departure angle of 25 degrees.

Its all-wheel drive system has selectable 4WD High, 4WD Low, and 4WD Auto modes.

There are also selectable Eco, Normal, Sport, Snow, Mud and Sand/Rock drive modes, with additional features such as Turn Assist, Crawl Control and an Expert mode intended for those taking the Stockman off-road.

The Stockman measures 5450mm long, 2010mm wide and 1890mm tall on a 3250mm wheelbase, making it roughly the same size as its PHEV rivals.

Its tub measures 1560mm long, 1560mm wide (1220mm between the arches) and 500mm deep.

Chery has published preliminary specifications for a Stockman Ultimate variant, with the following equipment listed as standard:

  • 17-inch alloy wheels in 285/70 R17 all-terrain tyres
