DeLorean Enters Flying Car Competition

At the end of “Back to the Future,” we see Doc Brown show up in the DeLorean with an urgent warning about Marty and Jennifer’s kids in the future. After Doc prepares the DeLorean for time travel, Marty tells him he should back up because there’s no space to get to 88 mph. As Doc flips down his sunglasses he says, “Roads? Where we’re going, we don’t need roads.” In November, DeLorean Motor Company won’t need roads because it’s entering the Airspeeder International Series, an electric flying car competition.

The iconic automaker is slated to become the first American constructor in the Airspeeder International Series. “DeLorean has always stood for the courage to imagine transportation differently,” said Cameron Wynne, Chief Brand Officer, DeLorean Motor Company. “People have pictured a DeLorean in the sky for forty years. We decided it was time to stop picturing it.”

Founded on the idea that electric flying cars should be “developed through pressure, scrutiny, and the spectacle of racing,” Airspeeder created a series that combines artificial intelligence, aerospace, and motorsport into one high-pressure racing series. In this partnership, Airspeeder gains a new competitor, and DeLorean can use this series to help flying cars become a practical reality. Competitors will use electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft to compete.

Participating as the DeLorean Airspeeder Team, the DeLorean Motor Company will be making its debut when the season opens in November 2026. At the time of writing, no aircraft design or pilot lineup has been announced, but both are expected to be made public prior to the first race.

I’m no engineer, but something tells me that if DeLorean wants to really make a splash, its team of engineers should consider picking up a flux capacitor from the local O’Reilly Auto Parts store.
