Tesla introduces a new feature it hopes you’ll never use

Tesla has introduced a new Emergency Drive Away function which allows vehicles to be shifted into Drive during charging, enabling the charging cable to automatically disconnect from the vehicle.

Announced via @TeslaCharging on social media, the automaker said the feature only applies to Superchargers in the United States “for now”, with the latest software update (2026.38.3) needed to unlock the function.

There has been no confirmation on if or when the feature will be offered in Australia.

Standard operating procedure when a charge is complete requires owners to physically disconnect the charging cable from the vehicle.

“Should you find yourself needing to exit the scene more urgently, we’re rolling out Emergency Drive Away,” the clip on @TeslaCharging explained.

“So, this will enable you to override and drive away while the handle’s still connected.”

The feature works by enabling a vehicle to shift into Drive while charging, when it will automatically activate an Emergency Drive Away alert, which the driver will have to select ‘Activate’ to enable.

At this point, the charging handle will disconnect from the vehicle and fall to the ground, allowing the car to drive off.

Tesla warns the Emergency Drive Away function will damage both the vehicle and the Supercharger, and that “deliberate misuse will invoke additional penalties”.

Tesla director of charging Max de Zegher also posted about the feature on social media.

“We went back and forth on this for years but believe offering it is the right call,” Mr de Zegher said.

“Don’t abuse it, so we don’t have to restrict it… We’ll improve it quickly based on feedback.”

It comes shortly after a fatal shooting at a Tesla Supercharger in the US state of Idaho in August, when 66-year-old Dale Schultz was killed by a mass shooter while charging his vehicle; his wife was also injured in the attack, but survived.

“We select Supercharger locations with safety in mind and relocate sites deemed unsafe. Our goal is that you always feel safe getting out to unplug,” said Mr de Zegher.
